Close, The compressor was opened again and the cylinders were found to be highly polished almost to a mirror finish. After honing the liners and the compressor was reassembled the rings were able to seat in properly and the problem disappeared

Sounds like part of the problem may be the result of the thermal expansion or contraction of the pumps causing some fasteners to loosen. Sounds like either you got water in the system or the system wasn't completely drained of the mineral oil and there was a compatibility problem and you started growing a very strong batch of bacteria or algae.
Hope it wasn't on any critical system like a steering or CP system
