You can operate a scotch marine propulsion boiler on SW as a get 'er home last resort. We contaminated our feed water with SW in some accident that I can't remember, and had severely contaminated boilers by the time we got in. You have to manage the boiler carefully with continuous bottom blowdown w...

Drug Testing Upheld in Alberta Court

While this may be the construction industry, it is interesting to take note of. Will it follow thru into the marine industry? IMO, yes. Alberta Court of Appeal ruling upholds construction workplace drug testing 02/01/2008 7:27:00 PM EDMONTON - Construction and energy companies are happy with an Albe...

Ouch!
Add new oil to that the cost of flushing the systems, you are looking at in excess off 125k, assuming 4 engines. Expensive error.

Just want to add that sometimes this can be caused by your fuel oil purifier as well. I have seen a belt driven FOP that was not running up to speed contaminate the day tank with water. Add that to a ER staff not checking for water at the test cock and you have an interface plus bugs that have moved...

You have bugs in your fuel tank. They grow in the interface of the diesel/water and will form large mats of slimy goop for lack of a better descriptions. Tank has to be pumped out and pressure cleaned with HOT (70*C comes to mind but I'd have to check) water and hand dried with lint free rags. You w...

I made the assumption that the question referred to the 3 test cocks on the back of the boiler. This actually happened to me when I was a young watchkeeper. It scared the hell out of me, especially when I realized how long the previous watch had been firing the boiler in this condition. Happy days M...

http://oee1.nrcan.gc.ca/english/index.cfm?attr=12 I was on a course given by this shop. Not bad. They probably have more marine related info by now as they were just starting out. The American Navy has a huge incentive program for their ships to reduce fuel costs. If you go search around their site...

Priming the boiler is overfilling it so that water is carried over with the steam. This will have disastrous consequences downstream such as Water hammer and recip engine damage. Adding water to a boiler when the water level is below the cock ( I am talking Scotch Marine Boiler)can cause a collapse ...

I just checked with our wizards and they are in the process of installing a Telesat Canada system.
It will provide email and TV anywhere to the ship. The largest dome they are installing is a 600#, but that is a ship that carries over 100 persons including scientists. The rest are much smaller
