High Voltage Safety and Switch Gears for Marine Engineers

This course is part of a training initiative to provide workers with new skills needed to support a clean economy. It is fully funded by Canadian Colleges for a Resilient Recovery (C2R2) (PDF 207KB).

Overview

In this Transport Canada-approved course, you’ll be trained in High Voltage (HV) installations to meet the understanding and proficiencies requirements as set out in STCW 2010 Tables A-III/2 and A-III/6 for electrical, electronic and control systems at the management level.

At the end of this course, you know how to:

Describe safe practices and procedures for management of marine high voltage operations as outlined by STCW Convention and Code.
Outline design features of a marine high voltage system and the maintenance of distribution capability to the extent expected of management level officers.
Detail safe procedures, practices and methods for troubleshooting and reconfiguring a marine high voltage system to maintain supply.

Admission requirements

Proof of prior electrical or electro-technical experience in a shipboard environment.
Proof of approved 12 months sea service as an Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) while holding an unlimited EOOW Certificate of Competency (CoC) STCW Reg. III/1 or
Existing ETO with at least 12 months of sailing experience or Existing Electrical Officers having one year sailing experience or Marine Engineering Officer Class 1 or Marine Engineering Officer class 2 CoC holders.
Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents ages 18+.
