Captain Vernon Robert Conrad

Post by JK »

I did some backward counting and this gentleman would have been at Halifax shipyards sometimes after 15-16 years old and sailing with the merchant marines and presumably the convoys in his late teens, early 20's.
Rest easy, Sir, you served well.

It is with great sadness that the family of Captain Vernon Robert Conrad, 96, of Lunenburg, announce his passing on Thursday, February 6, 2020 in the Veteran's Unit of Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in Rose Bay, Vernon was a son of the late Henry and Florence (Peeler) Conrad. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Vernon went to sea at 13 years of age and was dory fishing by the age of 15. He worked with Lorne Ritcey, fishing out of Riverport. During the Second World War he worked at the Halifax Shipyard, then went on to join the merchant marines. After the war, he returned to Lunenburg and at age 22 he bought a shore boat, and later bought a 55 foot longliner and fished for another 10 years. In 1964 he became a Skipper, sailing with Adams and Knickle, scallop fishing until the age of 68, retiring in 1991. Vernon was blessed to have lived a long and full life. He was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg. Vernon is survived by sons, Michael (Ann Marie), Bridgewater; Wayne (Elaine), Blue Rocks; grandchildren, Michelle (Paul Osha), Mark (Kristen), Scott (Donna), Christa (Dwayne Tanner); great-grandchildren, Kayden, Gavin, Anna, Sarah, Riley, and Justin; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Vernon was predeceased by his wife, Frances; daughter, Annette; sisters, Mildred, Jean, Muriel; brothers, Donald, Gilbert and Bruce. Friends are invited to share their memories of Vernon with his family during visitation on Monday from 7-9 p.m. in Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. 3, Lunenburg. A funeral service to celebrate Vernon's life will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Lawrence Mawhinney officiating, Chaplain of the Veteran's Unit of Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg. Flowers from the immediate family only. Memorial donations made to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. www.sweenyfuneralhome.ca
