This gentleman served on the Flower Class corvette Kamloops which would have been escorting convoys in the Atlantic.

The Qu-Appelle was the English F class destroyer Foxhound which was transferred to the RCN in 1943 and renamed. She did escort duties in the Western Approaches off of Ireland and England then transferred to the English Channel to protect convoys during the Normandy landings. Qu'Appelle engaged German surface ships several times before she was sent to Iceland for more convoy escort work in October '44.

It is interesting to see that his military career after the war was not the RCN and their vessels.

RIP, SIR, you were young and brave.

Age 97 of Yarmouth, passed away peacefully on December 4,2020 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Pubnico Head, Yarmouth Co., on November 29, 1923, he was the only son of Clinton and "Leta" Spinney. Wes was a veteran of the Second World War, joining the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 17. He served his country on HMCS "Kamloops" and HMCS "Qu-Appelle". Wes received the Liberation of France medal which he was very proud of.

The obituary goes on to say:
Upon his return to civilian life, he continued his military interests by serving 18 years with the 14th Field Artillery and as an instructor for 33 years with the 110 Yarmouth Army cadets.
