Position: Second Engineer

Location: Leamington/Kingsville, ON

Rotation: 1 week on / 1 week off

Reports To: Chief Engineer

Pelee Island Transportation Company operates the Pelee Islander and Pelee Islander II ferries between Pelee Island and the Mainland from April to December. Licensed employees work seasonally from March to mid-December each year although this position will commence in February 2023 to support vessel dry docking.

We seek to fill one Second Engineer position working a 7 day on/off rotation. The company provides meals and accommodation is available on the vessel during your work rotation.

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, Duties of a second engineer include:

Operate, maintain and repair auxiliary equipment including air compressors, purifiers, pumps, etc; the incumbent is expected to known all machinery and equipment within the scope of the Second Engineer position.
Maintain engine room log book, conduct daily tank soundings, maintain fuel, lubricant and PMS records.
Listen, understand and respond to Chief Engineer’s standing orders; take initiative to learn necessary skills and acquire knowledge of all equipment on board.
Conduct rounds of engine room and other machinery spaces and notify the Chief Engineer of any deficiency or malfunction.
Understand and use Safety Management System and adhere to the policies in effect for a safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
Works effectively with Mechanical Assistants and supports their development at work.
Assist the Chief Engineer in maintaining ship spares and consumables inventory up to date.
Communicate with bridge officers and execute any orders with respect to operation of machinery.
Ensure good housekeeping of machinery spaces, control room, and maintaining manufacturer’s manuals.
Conduct rounds of engine room and other machinery spaces and informs the Chief Engineer and / or Captain, in a timely manner of any condition with regard to machinery or personnel which may affect the safety or efficiency of the engineering department, the vessel, passengers or crew.
Listens, understand and responds to Chief Engineer’s standing orders; take initiative to learn necessary skills and acquire knowledge of all equipment on board.
Compliance with safety of operations, maintenance and environmental practices outlined in OSTC policy and Safety Management Manual.
The daily supervision of cadet or MA personnel in the performance of their designated operation or maintenance activities.
Ensure good housekeeping of machinery spaces, control room, and maintaining manufacturer’s manuals.
Communication and cooperation with the bridge and deck with respect to machinery operation
Ensuring compliance with Standing Orders while in charge of a watch.
Ensuring compliance with Engineering Watchkeeping Standards on Ships and for the safety of the other watches
Carrying out emergency duties and participating in drill
Making routine rounds, operates equipment and maintains logs, data or spares inventory received during the watch or repair period.
Use of planned maintenance program NS5 including undertaking assigned maintenance per the system, update and sign off including inventory used.

Specific Engineering Systems

Maintenance of the main engines, and all critical and non-critical auxiliary equipment and associated systems as assigned by NS5 or Chief Engineer. This shall include assisting Chief maintain inventory records and parts levels required onboard or locally ashore.
Ensure that monthly cylinder pressures for all ME are taken, noted, and recorded.
Ensuring all Emergency Equipment is functional and maintained appropriately by:
undertaking monthly Electrical Emergency inspections noting maintenance required.
undertaking Bi-Weekly Fire Door Inspections noting maintenance required.
undertaking weekly Watertight Door Inspections noting maintenance required.
Assisting deck officers in maintaining emergency equipment as required
Ensuring that the condition of all deck machinery, bow visor, bow door, stern door and vehicle ramps are maintained to company standards.

Qualifications, Experience and Abilities

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Second Engineer holds a valid Third Class (preferred) or Fourth Class (acceptable) certificate of competency plus at least three years of related experience (preferably from a passenger ferry operator)
General knowledge, understanding and experience in operating, maintaining and repairing engines, propulsion systems and ship apparatus.
Valid Marine Emergency Duties certification, Passenger Safety Management
Valid Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate
Valid Canadian passport; Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status.
Ability to perform high physical demands including:
Regular need to climb stairs
Lifting up to 50lbs
Ability to stand for 2 hours at a time
Ability to climb up to 12ft ladders
Ability to read, write, understand and speak English.
Proficient with Microsoft applications; ABS ship management system is an asset
Preferred applicants possess initiative, are analytical problem solvers, have a team-oriented work style and a track record for safety at work
