Director, Asset Maintenance

Reporting to the Vice President, Infrastructure & Planning, the Director, Asset Maintenance is responsible for planning, budgeting, designing, preparing tender documents, as well as supervision of staff and contractors with regards to the strategic maintenance of the Port’s physical infrastructure.

The successful candidate must have a Degree in Civil Engineering with a minimum of ten (10) years’ experience, or an equivalent combination of education/experience. Must be a certified Professional Engineer. Must have knowledge of AutoCAD and general computer skills as well as GIS (Geographical Information System) experience. Experience on project estimating and contractual matters is required.

The successful candidate must have hands on experience with managing and running a variety of construction projects such as building maintenance, electrical, HVAC and heavy civil. Experience in assessing the condition of infrastructure; performing inspections, investigations, etc., scheduling for all types of work (both contractors and consultants and union maintenance employees) and managing project budgets, comprehensive background in engineering design (civil) in marine/highway/bridge/municipal and structures, both steel, concrete, and timber. Experience in or the ability to acquire the knowledge of strategic asset maintenance.

Good writing and communication skills, particularly technical writing (specifications, scope of works, etc.) as well as a basic familiarity and understanding of construction contract law is required. Must be well versed in occupational health and safety matters and have an understanding of environmental mitigation measures in construction projects. Must have a good working knowledge of project management techniques and engineering design principles as applied to small and medium size projects including initial planning, management of the in-house design process, coordination with consultants and stakeholders, administration, and supervision of construction contracts.

The successful candidate will be subject to successfully completing a physical examination, must pass and maintain a Criminal Record Check and must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Marine Transportation Security Clearance (MTSC). The Halifax Port Authority has a policy requiring all individuals to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Exemptions may be considered for individuals who cannot be fully vaccinated due to a certified medical contradiction, religion, or any other prohibited ground of discrimination as defined in the Canadian Human Rights Act.
