Reporting to Supervisor Marine Services, the Marine Coordinator provides support in the management and operation of the Toronto Island Ferry Services.
Implements detailed plans and recommends policies/procedures regarding program specific requirements.
Supervises, motivates and trains assigned staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, continuous learning and encourages innovation in others.
Assists in the coordination of vacation and overtime requests.
Assists in the preparation of work schedules and the co-ordination of dock personnel and vessel crews.
Orders fuels for vessels, arranges for delivery and prepares statistical information on fuel consumption for each vessel.
Oversees all passenger movement while boarding/departing vessels.
Directs/re-directs vessels as required.
Maintains operational records and prepares reports as required.
Maintains radio communication with the vessels, island staff and ticket office.
Monitors and coordinates overall performance, operation and maintenance of vessels, docks and related equipment in accordance with Transport Canada regulations.
Arranges and oversees the dry docking of all vessels and ensures work is completed as specified and in compliance with Transport Canada regulations.
Arranges for all Transport Canada yearly and periodic inspections of machinery and vessels.
Maintains all Deck Logs and Engineering Logs and ensures preventative maintenance is completed.
Assists with the development of vessel and facility maintenance plans and ensures that implementation of plans are properly carried out.
Liaises with third-party vendors, sub-contractors, and Transport Canada regarding vessels and machinery matters.
Acts as key lead on Capital Projects related to new vessels and docking infrastructure
Extensive experience in marine operations, including the maintenance of engines and mechanical and electrical equipment.
Extensive experience of passenger and vehicle ferry service operations in Canada
Considerable experience providing work direction in a unionized environment.
Considerable experience overseeing vessel and dock construction and repair projects, including preparation of Transport Canada yearly and 5 year vessel inspections
Transport Canada tickets for Marine Engineer, Captain or Mate would be an asset
Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class 'G' Driver's License and must qualify for the City's equipment operating permits and requirements.
Strong interpersonal, customer service, written, oral communication and conflict resolution skills.
Effective administrative, planning, human resources and financial management skills and proficient in the use of computer software applications.
Ability to operate as a member of a management team and self-directed work team, work cooperatively with frontline staff, community groups, bargaining units and other division.
Ability to work professionally with others using courtesy, tact, good judgement, while maintaining confidentiality of sensitive communications
Ability to work independently with minimal guidance.
Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Regulations, applicable Collective Agreements and related Labour Legislation, Marine Occupational Health and Safety (MOSH), Domestic Ferry Ship Security Regulations
Must be able to work shifts, weekends, overtime and statutory holidays
