Job Title: Technical Manager

Location: Halifax, NS

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

Key Accountabilities:

Monitor shipboard technical, safety, environmental & quality issues
Control and monitor vessel planned maintenance and condition monitoring program
Manage vessel operational performance with Chief Engineer
Ensure that client relationships are pro-actively developed by continually improving the level of service provided in accordance with the provision of service agreement and industry standard practices
Act as client interface as required on technical matters, when called upon to do so.
Assist line management with the functioning and compliance with FIMS
Assist Operations manager with ISM and ISO Certification in conjunction with the shore management team, assist Operations Manager in managing corrective actions
Conduct vessel inspections to confirm compliance with Flag and Classification Rules and Regulations including SOLAS, MARPOL, Load line, STCW, ILO Conventions and any other applicable industry codes and standards.
Maintain records of defects and ensure corrective action plans are in place and implemented
Co-ordinate the provision of specialist advice on technical issues to vessels and office staff, when called upon to do so
Evaluate vessel requirements with regard to machinery, paint, chemicals and lube oils
Act as a member of the Emergency Response Team during an emergency
Arrange Third Party inspections when required to do so
Assist COO with Insurance claims
Monitor the OPEX budget of the vessel and prepare regular reports as directed by COO
Authorise the purchase of spares and services ordered by the vessel, ensuring they are in line with operational requirements, finance procedures and budgetary restrictions
Maintain First Class Motor and associated certificates and sufficient security clearance to be able to serve as interim Chief Engineer of MV Asterix in the event of a gap in the normally assigned crews
Any other technical duties as required by the COO.

Knowledge/Experience

Good team working skills
Ability to perform tasks in a safe and efficient way
Ability to communicate clearly and understand instructions
When in doubt, ability to consult before taking any action
Minimum qualification: First Class Engineer (Motor) certificate valid in Canada
5 years’ experience working in a marine related industry in a senior technical role, preferably with tanker or offshore vessels
5 years’ experience as a senior engineer on vessels powered by slow speed, large bore marine engines.
Experience with managing and trouble shooting SCADA systems for machinery and cargo systems.
Experience with EAM systems commonly used in the marine industry.
Experience with the setup and utilization of condition-based maintenance programs employing engine cylinder pressure monitoring and vibration analysis.
Experience in ISM and ISO quality and environmental management systems.
Ability to communicate in the English language

Pre-Requisites

Must be a Canadian Citizen
Must hold Enhanced Reliability Security Clearance
Must hold a valid driver’s license
Must hold a valid Canadian passport
