The Marine Services division of Public Works maintains and operates seven provincial ferries: Englishtown, Little Narrows, Country Harbor, LaHave River, Tancook Island, and Digby Neck. Our Ferry staff help further connect and expand Nova Scotia’s transportation network while ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our Provincial Ferries. Our ferries operate 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. About Our Opportunity


As a Marine Engineer, you will join an engaged and collaborative team. Hours of work include 12 hour shifts and may require the working of various alternating hours per week in order to maintain the ferry schedule.

Primary Accountabilities


You will operate the main engines of the Ferry; ensuring that all auxiliaries, pumps, ventilating fans, steering motors and furnaces are functioning in a safe and efficient manner.

You will inspect, repair, and maintain the mechanical and electrical equipment on the ferry.

You will direct traffic on the Ferry; arranging vehicles on the deck and ensuring that the boat is clean at all times.
Qualifications and Experience


You have Grade 10 education and 3 years of mechanical experience and a SVMO (small vessel machinery operator’s license) is an requirement.

You have your Seafarers Certificate of Medical Examination, a valid Marine Emergency Duty Certificate, and valid Marine First Aid.

Outstanding teamwork and interpersonal skills are essential, along with your ability to work independently with minimum supervision. Strong ability to exercise independent judgement and initiative in your duties will aid in ensuring the Ferry meets safety standards and maintains schedules.

Working Conditions


The ability to lift 50 pounds, as well as the ability to stand, shovel, walk, climb and sit for extended periods of time is required in this role. You may be in contact with diesel fumes from equipment, noise and dust. Outside work is required in varying weather conditions. Shift work is required, including nights and weekends.

Pay Grade: MOS 13

Salary Range: $1,849.70 - $1,899.77 Bi-Weekly
