MARINE ENGINEER – 3rd CLASS

This position is responsible for the maintenance and operations of the PortsToronto fleet including the ferries providing

access to and from Billy Bishop Airport. The Marine Engineer – 3rd Class, facilitates the maintenance, inspection and

upkeep of the vessels, reporting any operational issues to the Captain.

Note: This role works 7 ½ hour days, 5 days per week (Mon-Fri). *This is a Union represented position belonging to

CUPE Local 416*


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Handling the public in a tactful and courteous manner.

Responsible for the efficient operation and maintenance of the power unit and all other machinery and

equipment of the vessels to which assigned.

Responsible for the cleanliness of the Engine Room and machinery spaces and proper housekeeping of same.

Maintain daily logs of all equipment.

Maintain daily and weekly checklists as assigned.

Maintain Electric Ferry Charging and Power Systems

Report daily status condition of vessels and all associated operating equipment

Identify and correct all malfunctions and needed repairs.

Required to complete reports regarding collisions, mishaps or unusual occurrences.

Reports all equipment malfunctions, and/or incidents involving passengers to the on-duty Captain as quickly as

possible.

Must comply with all PortsToronto policies and procedures including Health and Safety policies, SOPs,

procedures, and legislated requirements, as well as being familiar with the regulations of the Ship Safety Branch

of Transport Canada.

Must wear designated safety equipment/PPE as required.

Ensures conformance with the departmental preventative maintenance schedules while maintaining an

adequate supply of standard parts, oils and grease.

Performs water and fire watch activities.

Ensures fuel & battery levels are sufficient at all time.

Inspects, cleans and performs minor and routine electrical, plumbing, mechanical and hydraulic repairs as

required to generators, compressors, pumps and deck machinery, equipment and facilities to maintain effective

operation and functioning.

Participates in security watches during non-operational periods.

Ensures the safe and efficient operation and functioning of all machinery and equipment (i.e. controls panel,

generators, compressors, pumps, deck machinery and facility) on the vessel.

Disassembles machinery and related equipment to replace parts and makes repairs and/or adjustments when

required.

Performs cleaning and preventative maintenance repairs to electrical, electronic, plumbing, mechanical and

hydraulic systems.

May accompany the vessel during refit and assists personnel in carrying out repairs and alterations.

Performs routine inspections of primary machinery, equipment and back-up systems to ensure functionality.

Greases and oils machines and equipment.

As operationally required, perform the duties of a Deckhand Engineer which includes assisting in docking the

ferry and vehicle stowage, in a safe and efficient manner.

Performs periodic inspections of heating system to ensure functionality and adequate fuel supply and

monitoring of all fire-fighting and safety equipment.

Other duties as assigned by PortsToronto.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Certified Third Class Marine Engineer or better.

Possess and maintain an up-to-date certificate of Marine Emergency Duties Level “D” training.

2 years minimum experience as 3rd class engineer on ferries, tugs, or similar vessels or combination of

education and related experience.

Must be able to overhaul & maintain all machinery for which responsible.

Must be in good physical condition. Possess and maintain an up-to-date Seafarers Medical Certificate.

Must have good command of English, written and verbal skills (reading, writing, and speaking clearly)

Must possess a Marine Basic First Aid Certificate or obtain one within two months.

Valid Class “G” Drivers License.
