The Position
Under the direction of the Technical Superintendent, and the guidance of the Lead hand, the Marine Technician will contribute to the success of SAAM Towage by providing preventive and corrective maintenance work to the fleet vessels, as well as at the maintenance facilities, in line with Company and industry SHEQ policies, to ensure the correct functioning, operability and availability of the fleet.

This position falls under an Memorandum of Understanding between the Technical Team and SAAM Towage Canada. It's benefits, rate of pay and entitlements are stipulated under this agreement.

In addition, there is a location allowance for the members of the Technical Team that reside in Price Rupert.

Some of the Job functions for this role will be:

Conducts planned or corrective maintenance and / or assembly work for the fleet's equipment, according to company's guidelines to maintain the operational continuity of the tugs and ensure organizational and industry compliance.
Records all carried out jobs and materials in the maintenance control system to achieve traceability of work orders and compliance with maintenance planning.
Complies with SHEQ processes to ensure accident and incident prevention towards workers, our environment and or our assets.
Verifies mechanical spare parts and supplies to provide purchase orders to the procurement department to ensure supply availability and achieve compliance with the company's maintenance plan.
Reports all control failures, incidents and accidents to people, environment, image and/or company assets and coordinates the solution of said failures to ensure the continuous improvement of the processes and to return the tugs to service in the shortest possible time.
Attends and actively participates in all safety and environmental drills and inspections, toolbox talks and other recommended training to achieve awareness of internal and external risks and to reduce possible incidents or accidents.
Needs to react to change productively and to undertake other tasks as assigned.

To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate the following competencies:

Technical Skills - Ability to operate, control and repair equipment related to the marine industry, judging what is needed and when is needed, evaluating the quality of products and work. Ability to write reports, using industry related software as well as regular office platforms such as MS Office.

And possess the following minimum requirements:

High school diploma plus a trade or certificate as a Heavy-Duty Mechanic or Millwright Certificate with Interprovincial Red Seal Endorsement.
A minimum of 2-3 years of hands-on mechanical maintenance and repair experience, preferably with tugs or marine vessels.
Mechanical, hydraulics, and/or electrical trades skills.
Knowledge of vessel operations and requirements of the towing industry is preferred.
Marine engineer experience (4th Class or Higher) would be an asset.
Knowledge of steel working and welding will be an asset.
The incumbent must be physically fit and psychologically comfortable entering and working in confined, cramped spaces.
Intermediate to advanced computer skills (MS Office).
Valid class 5 driver’s license.
Fork-lift certification or ability to acquire it.
Availability to travel to our different locations to provide assistance when needed.
