WaterBridge Ferries is a private-owned ferry operator company based in Nakusp, British Columbia, Canada. As contractors to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, we are responsible for the safe ferry passage of people in the communities surrounding the Arrow Lakes in BC. Marine Oiler, Auxiliary

This position is offered as an Auxiliary position and is considered “as and when required” and call-outs require the ability to report for duty with short notice.

Under the immediate supervision and functional direction of a licensed Engineer Officer, performing general labour duties. The duties include the cleaning and maintenance of engine spaces, engines, and other equipment maintenance. Participation in, and operation of all equipment associated with required emergency drills. The duties may also include securing the vessel from vandalism and theft, tending lines, and patrolling the vessel for fire and flooding emergencies.

Key Accountabilities:
Assists the Shift Engineer in the servicing, maintenance, repairs, and operation of the ship’s machinery by:

Carrying out planned maintenance routines, such as lube oil changes, fuel filter and oil filter changes, inspections and setting valve gear clearances.
Starting and shutting down main engines and auxiliary machinery.
Monitoring and recording equipment gauges and fluid levels.
Check sounding tanks, void spaces and levels of bunkering fuel and lube oil.
Pumping and cleaning bilges, and void spaces.
Taking inventory of spare parts.
Operating power tools, such as drills, grinders, and welder.
Maintains and repairs deck machinery, deck pumps, and hydraulic equipment.
Participates in and operates, all equipment associated with fire, lifeboat, life raft, and emergency drills.
Checks and maintains all personal protective gear provided.
Performs Night Watchman’s duties.
Assists on deck and the terminal with snow removal, as required.
Other duties as assigned by the Shift Engineer.

Qualifications/Skills/Experience:

Preferred candidates possess current STCW Basic Safety training or better. Training is available for the successful candidate; must be able to travel.
A Pleasure Craft Operators Certificate is required.
Must provide a valid Marine Medical Certificate PRIOR to start date
Must hold a valid BC Driver’s License – Class 5
Minimum Grade 12 completion required
Working knowledge of internal combustion engines and related machinery
Experience in a machine shop or garage assisting with repairs and maintenance of various engines an asset
Working knowledge of marine vessels and ferry systems an asset
Ability to interact effectively and courteously with others
Must be physically fit
Is a team player with an approachable demeanor
Good written and oral communication skills a must
Demonstrates ability to respond to emergency situations calmly, effectively and efficiently
Comfortable working in enclosed spaces and varying temperatures
Steel toed footwear required

Accommodation:
We have limited term accommodation available while on shift.

Location:
This position resides on Upper Arrow Lake, Shelter Bay, in the interior of British Columbia, Canada and is best suited for those who currently live in or are in the process of relocating to the area. Travel to the point of assembly and meals are at your own expense.
