Assistant Engineer (Nordic Pearl)

The Canfisco Group (Canfisco) is a fully integrated seafood processing company with headquarters in Vancouver, BC. Canfisco operates the largest fleet of commercial fishing vessels in British Columbia, harvests over 100 million pounds of fish annually and exports its seafood products (canned, fresh, frozen, smoked and value added) to 43 countries around the world.

We are currently hiring an Assistant Engineer to join our crew on the Nordic Pearl (IMO 8825896), a commercial fishing trawler (515 gross tonnage). Based out of Vancouver, BC, this position is a full-time, year-round position and part of the company’s long-term succession plan for a critical position.

The Assistant Engineer will work alongside the Chief Engineer and Skipper to learn and assist with the day-to-day maintenance, operations, and repairs of all electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems on board. Vessel specific on-the-job training will be provided.

Main Duties

o Carry out duties assigned by the Chief Engineer or Skipper.

o Operate main engine, machinery, and all auxiliary equipment including steering, deck, motors, pumps, and generators.

o Monitor performance and log repairs and maintenance for all equipment and machinery.

o Trouble shoot, conduct routine maintenance and emergency repairs.

o Maintain detailed records and prepare reports regarding engine performance and failures.

o Assist crew in deploying and retrieving fishing gear as well as stowing and discharging of fish.

o Participate in shoreside repairs and maintenance during non-fishing periods.

Requirements:

o Marine Engineer, Fourth Class 4 Certification is required. Third Class certification is an asset.

o 3 years of experience working onboard fishing vessels required.

o Groundfish trawling experience is an asset.

o Strong knowledge of support systems such as hydraulics, pumps, refrigeration, plumbing, propellor systems etc.

o Must be ready to work long hours and be at sea for extended periods of time.

o Must be physically fit to climb up and down gangplank, steep stairs, vertical ladders inside and outside the vessel without assistance.

o Must be able to work in confined spaces.

o Track record of safety and efficient ship handling.

o Cooperative and personable – must respect and work well with others in close quarters.

Work Schedule

o Fishing schedule (November – May), irregular work hours required based on fishing activity.

o Charter work (June – October), expect to be at sea for extended periods of time (1-3 months).

o Shoreside repairs and maintenance duties when not fishing (8 hours/day).

Compensation

$80,000 per year. Comprehensive benefits package including extended health, vision, dental, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment and emergency medical travel insurance.
