We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Port Engineer to join our team at Hullo, VFIC. As the Port Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient operation of our fleet of vessels, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements, and managing a team of engineering crews. This role requires strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of maritime operations.

Responsibilities

As the Port Engineer, you are primarily responsible for maintaining and repairing Hullo’s high-speed vessels, Sthuqi and Spuhels. Your daily tasks include responding to and diagnosing engineering issues on board vessels, implementing repair recommendations, managing the planned maintenance program, coordinating vessel refits, and providing guidance to shipboard engineers and the night maintenance team. The position reports to the Technical Superintendent.

This position is based full-time in Nanaimo due to business requirements.

What you’ll do:

· Address issues reported by vessel crew or onboard engineers and assess repair feasibility while the vessel is in service.

· Determine estimated downtime for repairs requiring vessel removal from service, collaborating with the Marine Superintendent and Terminal Manager for scheduling.

· Create detailed repair work orders for scheduled out-of-service/dry dock periods.

· Source and obtain quotes for new equipment, initiate purchase orders and ensure efficient delivery.

· Supervise repair work to ensure timely and quality completion.

· Develop and manage planned maintenance systems/software.

· Coordinate work scope preparation for vessels before out-of-service and docking periods.

· Provide vessel systems training for vessel crew.

· Collaborate with Technical Superintendent and Crewing to mentor, train, and assess engineers and night maintenance staff.

What you’ll bring:

· Bachelor’s degree or diploma in marine engineering. The preferred candidate is a qualified 2nd Class Engineer with the ability to sail as Chief Engineer.

· Prior experience in naval architecture, mechanical engineering, or technical project management preferred.

· Minimum 5 years of experience in vessel operations, preferably onboard passenger vessels.

· Expert knowledge of vessels and propulsion systems.

· Willingness to assist team members with mechanical repairs.

· Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with interpersonal abilities.

· Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills for real-time solutions.

· Sharp analytical skills and attention to detail for effective problem-solving.

· Ability to diagnose electrical and mechanical failures and modify or replace parts.

· Positive team-oriented attitude, adaptable to challenging environments.

· Demonstrated leadership skills to effectively manage and motivate a team.

· Resourcefulness and willingness to learn from others.

· Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and make sound engineering decisions.

· Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

· Demonstrated experience building and managing planned maintenance and vessel monitoring systems. Experience with IBM Maximo preferred.

· Proficiency in maritime regulations, safety standards, and environmental requirements.

· Ability to thrive under pressure and make sound decisions in fast-paced environments.
