Picture Quiz
They say that every picture tells a story. In the following triptychet each picture tells a short story that combines with the others to tell the full story.
Do these pictures whisper to you like grains of sand, softly sussurating across the dunes in the Sea breeze, or do they bellow at you in the stentorian thunder of a drill instructor?
With apologies for the delay in posting the pictures

Re: Picture Quiz
Lots to look at in those pictures!
Are we looking at an embarkation platform for a lifeboat?

Re: Picture Quiz
No JK, the pictures are of a cargo crane, and the tower supporting the crutch for it and the platform where the crane hook is secured when stowed.

Re: Picture Quiz
I downloaded the photos and had another look, they were larger then I thought. I could only see the cracked welds and flanges at the brackets but not what they were on.
I really like the fact that the upper end of that block is tied off to that flimsy platform. There are tripped stiffeners under the bottom platform where the hook is tied down. The structure at the deckhouse front probably has broken welds going by the staining. It looks like the crane operator tried to boom up while still firmly attached.
No one noticed that their platform is a trifle distorted and by the looks of the rustcicles has been like this for awhile? The ladders are scary.
What also caught my attention was the corrosion on the windows. They leak, then the bulkhead below starts to corrode, the subfloor fails and then the deck under.

Re: Picture Quiz
yes indeed that is better JK, thanks for editing. A maximum size of about 150-200kb for pictures sizes is probably the best to reduce to before uploading.
Yes, I do believe the crane stowage was an after thought.

Re: Picture Quiz
You are on the right lines, look closely at the old mooring rope securing the crane hook to the Deck.
How do you think it gets tightened to the point where that heavy old rope is as flattened as it is?

Re: Picture Quiz
I'll leave this fun for other folks.
I would be willing to bet that the mooring line was a used piece that was scavenged for this use.
The sad part is at 25, I would have bounced up without a second thought, now, I look at it and think, hmmm.
Science ship?

Re: Picture Quiz
Hi JK,
The ship is a banana boat, one of a Class of 4, the crane is used for loading and discharging 20 & 40 foot Reefer Containers. When I spotted the problem I explained it to the Chief Officer, he told me all the other ships used exactly the same technique for stowing the crane , therefore it must be right.......

Re: Picture Quiz
I guess that someone nips up, hooks the line over the hook and the operator takes up.
If the person on deck does not know the hand signals, the operator is new or the controls stick, there will be a delay in stopping which will lead to the damage in the photos. That a 30 tonne crane?
On the ships I have been on, there is a substantial pad on deck with an heavy eye to hook the blockinto and a boom cradle.
I can't tell if this boom is in a cradle or just hanging out there with that flimsy rigging screw keeping it from moving.
The second ladder looks high enough that it has to meet MOSH with appropriate pad eyes to attach harness onto. There are no harness attachment points on the platforms either.
Then again MOSH may not be an issue on those ships yet.
I saw the container points on deck, that is why I thought science. They load all their gear and make labs in them.
