The Port Engineer is responsible for the maintenance and appearance of the vessels in a manner that enhances the Interpretive Experience of our guests and Respects the Planet. The Port Engineer is responsible for overseeing and assigning the daily projects and routine maintenance. The Port Engineer also communicates status of department work activities to the Manager of Marine Operations and is responsible for organizing the work duties for the Marine Engineers, Technicians, and Assistants. The Port Engineer records assignments in appropriate programs and places with accuracy. Reporting to the Manager of Marine Operations, essential job functions and duties include but are not limited to the following:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensures vessels are maintained in accordance with Hornblower Niagara Cruises (HNC) Safety Management System (SMS), ISO Respect management system, vessel security plan and wheelhouse resources management
Ensures parts inventory is set and maintained at desired levels
Accountable for scheduling the replenishment of consumables to avoid the interruption of operations
Directly manages the Marine Engineers and Technicians as well as the Engineering Assistants in all areas of Marine Transportation Safety and Security
Manages and approves engineering time off, sick time and all other requests
Collaborates with the Port Captain – Operations to create and manage engineering schedules
Responsible for performance management, including coaching, counseling, developing and engagement of the engineering team
Accountable for providing Engineers with the tools, documentation and schedules to complete training, checklists and inspections to meet the regulatory, legislative and required contractual obligations
Ensures Engineers are completing and recording checklists and inspections
Reviewing and recommending updates to the departmental policies, procedures and plans
Recommend, plan and execute projects as directed by the Marine Operations Manager
Assist in the preparation and achievement of the marine operating/capital budget and strategic plan
Work with Port Captain – Operations, Port Captain – Training and Compliance and other Department Managers to share information, ideas and strategies for continuous improvements
Develop new and innovative ways to enhance safety, operational efficiency and guest experience
Ensure ongoing cost analysis and containment in responsible areas
Assist with the recruitment, placement and onboarding of crew, including Marine Engineers, Technicians and Engineering Assistants

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AS ENGINEER:

As the Engineer on duty, ensures the safe and reliable operation of all vessels, systems, machinery, and equipment under his/her care with due regard for the Hornblower Niagara Cruises (HNC) Safety Management System (SMS) and ISO Respect Management System (RMS), the Vessel Security Plan (VSP), proper standards of watchkeeping, and in accordance with practice of good seamanship
Directly supervises the Marine Maintenance Technicians and Assistants
Routinely inspects all areas of the vessels, stages, dock, and marine railway for unsafe conditions, and assists in accident investigations and reports
Participate in emergency drills in accordance with Transport Canada regulations, the Safety Management System, and Vessel Security Plan. Participate in safety meetings in conformance with HNC policy, to ensure a routinely efficient and safe operation at all times and the proper use of equipment during any possible emergency
Maintains engineering operations and maintenance logs; paying particular attention to proper recording of incidents and irregularities
Ensures a clean workplace throughout the day, at the beginning and end of shifts
Reports non-conformities to the Designated Person (Port Captain – Training & Compliance)
Ensures the safe and efficient operation of the business at all times using all available means
Supports Facilities, Guest Experience, and all other departments with projects, maintenance, and operations as required
Shall immediately notify the Master of the vessel if any critical system as laid out in the Safety Management System is not functioning
Ensures that all Safety Equipment is present and equipment is inspected to the standards laid out in the Canada Shipping Act

IDEAL CANDIDATE HAS:

A minimum of 3 years previous management experience within a marine operations environment
Marine engineering certificate, or other applicable trade certification with a Small Vessel Machinery Operator (Unlimited) certificate
SVOP or Limited Master Certificate (Training provided)
Current Marine Advanced First Aid
Current (within previous two (2) years) Transport Canada approved medical
Possess and maintain a current Ontario driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
Minimum 5 years of relevant maintenance and repair experience
Demonstrated knowledge of diesel engines, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
WHMIS for workers in Ontario an asset
Fall Arrest Training an asset
Confined Space Training an asset
Candidates, who, in addition to the above, possess specialized skills such as fitting, welding, equipment operating, will be given strong consideration
The ability to successfully complete a criminal background check
