Who you are:
You are seasoned Marine Engineer who prides him/herself on ensuring the vessel is operating at peak performance. You thrive in a fast paced floating work environment where no two days are the same. You are a proven team player and your mechanical aptitude is far above average.

Relief Auxiliary Engineer

The Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel machinery and supervision of engine room personnel, as required under Transport Canada Marine Regulations. This position is located in Nakusp, BC. We offer a 7on/7 off schedule with camp accommodations available. This position is offered as an auxiliary position and is considered “as and when required”.

Key Accountabilities:

Observing, maintaining, monitoring and adjusting all main and auxiliary machinery on board for safe and optimum performance.
Anticipating and/or troubleshooting defects on main and auxiliary machinery
Maintaining, inventorying and ordering of consumable and non-consumable parts, supplies and tools.
Assessing wear/damage, making and acting on recommended courses of repairs.
Ensuring maintenance schedules are followed and completed.
Operating and maintaining emergency equipment as required.
Initiating, instructing and carrying out damage control on vessel.
Operating, servicing, maintaining and carrying out running repairs on ancillary on-board systems and equipment
Participate in and lead emergency drills as required.
Supervising and motivating staff.
Mentor junior employees and oilers on engineering subjects and course studies for training, examinations, required certification and interpretations of the Canada Shipping Act and collective agreement.
Supervises good ships husbandry in the engine room.
Maintain accurate maintenance and operational logs.
Ensures all Health and Safety policies are adhered to.

Qualifications/Skills/Experience:

Current 4TH Class Marine Engineers Certificate or better;
Proven leadership skills;
High School Education;
Ability to meet and deal effectively and courteously with the general public, managers and other employees;
Professional written and oral communication skills a must;
Demonstrated supervisory skills and the skill to use judgment and learned responses to deal with emergency situations calmly, effectively and efficiently;
Working knowledge of the marine vessels and ferry systems.

Job Description

Under the direction of the Engineer, the Oiler is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of vessel machinery in the engine room as required under Transport Canada Marine Regulations. This position is located in Nakusp, BC. We offer a 7on/7off schedule with camp accommodation available. This position is offered as an axillary position and is considered “as and when required”.

Key Accountabilities:

• Assists the Engineer in the servicing, maintenance, repairs and operation of the ship's machinery by carrying out planned maintenance routines such as lube, fuel and oil filter changes, base inspections, waste systems and setting valve gear clearances etc.
• Is proficient in starting and shutting down main engines and auxiliary machinery.
• Maintain inventory of spare parts.
• Completes and maintains applicable logs, records and reports.
• Maintains and repairs deck machinery deck pumps and hydraulic equipment.
• Participates in and operates all equipment associated with fire, lifeboat/life raft and emergency drills.
• Changes over electrical power from ship to shore and shore to ship.
• Checks and maintains in good operational condition all personal protective gear.
• Assists in terminal facilities, maintenance, operations and repairs as required.
• Assists on deck as required subject to vessels operations.
• Meets and interacts with the public in a diplomatic and courteous manner.
• May perform Night Watchman duties including refueling.
• Maintains good ships’ husbandry throughout the engine room.
• Painting and maintaining overall vessel appearance.
• Performs other related duties.

Qualifications/Skills/Experience:

• Must have a current A-2 Marine Emergency Duties certification or better;
• High School Education;
• Ability to interact effectively and courteously with others;
• Is a team player with an approachable demeanor;
• Good written and oral communication skills a must;
• Demonstrated ability to respond to emergency situations calmly, effectively and efficiently;
• Working knowledge of marine vessels and ferry systems an asset;
• Comfortable working in enclosed spaces.
