The Department of Transportation and Works is responsible for the administration, supervision, control, regulation, management and direction of all matters relating to transportation and public works. As such, the department oversees the construction and maintenance of the provincial highways; the provision of the provincial ferry services; management of the provincial government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment; operation and maintenance of the provincial government air ambulances and water bombers; and construction and management of provincial government buildings. The vision of the Department of Transportation and Works is of safe, reliable and sustainable transportation and public works infrastructure and services, demonstrating a commitment to service excellence in supporting the social and economic needs of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Duties
This general maintenance and operations position starts up equipment in the engine room, bow thruster, steering flat and around the decks; Checks machinery for leaks, loose fittings, broken pipes, loose wires and any other hazards that can cause mechanical failure; Performs regular preventative maintenance work on machinery, checks running hours on machinery and orders oil and parts, as required; Performs minor mechanical repairs; Checks and maintains oil levels on all machinery; Ensures drains, sinks and toilets are work properly for passengers and crew; Advises Chief and Second Engineer on condition of equipment and/or potential problems that may arise; Cleans strainers in engine room, greases as required and ensure batteries are running; Performs general cleaning and painting in engine room and all machinery spaces; Performs checks of all safety equipment used for fire-fighting, lifesaving drills, and first aid equipment to ensure it is in good working condition; Completes records and maintains logs; Participates in fire-fighting and rescue operations, as required Other related duties as assigned.

Experience working within the engine room of marine vessels including routine engine maintenance and repairs
Completion of a recognized diesel mechanics course
M.E.D. A1, B1 and B2
Valid Marine Basic First Aid
Valid Marine Medical Certificate
WHMIS Certificate
Passenger Safety Management course (Asset)
Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (asset)
ROC-Marine Commercial (asset)


Assessment Criteria
Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of routine engine equipment
Ability to communicate (verbally)
Ability to manage time and organize tasks
Ability to solve problems independently
Ability to work in a team

Applicants are advised that positions will be of variable duration and terminate on or before March 31, 2017, subject to possibility of extension.
These positions are short term, temporary call-in
Participation in any safety course training, as offered and required by the Department
